If you are trying to maixmize your results, be sure to do compound lifts in the gym. I would go onto to youtube and look up some movements like the clean and press, full squats, dead lifts, and full snatches. In addition to building the most muscle by stimulating the nervous system, these lifts will give you maximum strength building results and will work the most important muscles of the body for functional movements.I have a somewhat unconventional method to my workouts but the results are great, and I get out of there quickly (I don't like to hang out in the gym). Here is a typical workout for me:Heavy Compound lift (something like squats, deadlift, clean and press, full snatch, lunge presses, etc.) + Complementary bodyweight lift (push-ups, pull-ups, etc.) + jumpropeDo 5 supersets, the first being a warmup with lighter weight and the last being a drop set.Next I move to a lighter compound movement superset:(Dips, Lunges, kettlebell swings, etc.) + Abdominal exercise (I usually do bicycle cruches, jackknives, or exercise ball tucks) + JumpropeThe jumprope will keep your heart-rate and metabolism up throughout the workout, burning the most fat.Again do 5 supersets in the same way you did the heavy circuit. Then I like to (if I'm not too wiped after that) do about a 2 mile run at about a 7:30 pace taking a break to walk briefly every half mile (changing your pace will keep your body in a state of shock, yielding the most gains). The whole thing should take less than an hour and a half including cardio.Again, I am unsure of your specific goals but you can go by the rule of thumb that if you are not sweating , you're not working hard enough. Try to avoid doing isolation exercises if you have general fitness and performance goals because these tend to refine aesthetics of muscles, not yield overall results. As far as a diet plan, make sure your portions are good. A typical rule of thumb you can use for most processed food is a serving size is about the size of your balled fist. Eat as many fruits, veggies, and whole foods as possible, and avoid refined carbohydrates. Small changes like oatmeal over cereal, greek yogurt over regular yogurt, and grilling or broiling foods over frying can make a big difference. The only way to get in really good shape is to eat a clean and properly proportioned diet. Of course with any exercise plan you want to make sure you are eating a proper amount of protein, although my results have been achieved without any supplements (I eat lots of whole foods and plenty of animal and plant protein in my diet).Try to prepare your own food, you'd be surprised how many calories restaurants have in theirs. If you do go out, try to use common sense and pick out more healthful options. Basically if you have a varied diet and eat mostly whole foods you can't go wrong.A lot about working out and proper diet is about common sense. When you're in the gym, try to go hard. A lot of it is psychological. This might sound silly but when I am tired and I need to finish a workout sometimes I think about what my favorite athlete (Ray Lewis) would do, and how he'd finish the workout with a high-level of intensity. Learning how to maintain that inner focus and intensity is going to make working out a lot easier. You are lucky to have access to good equipment, the rest is really up to you.Sorry if this answer was long-winded, this is my first yahoo answer. This was a broad question and really I could write a novel about it. Once you begin eating right and working out it will get easier and the changes will come and be self-perpetuating. You will learn how to eat and which workouts are the best and it will become second nature for you. I wouldn't watch the scale, instead I'd watch your body fat percentage and just basically judge how you feel every day. Changing your diet to a more nutrient rich one and starting a workout regimen should make you feel a lot better. My number one advice would be seek knowledge on the internet, which you are obviously already doing. Go onto youtube and look to see what the best exercises are. Mimic NFL workouts, those guys are the most freakishly athletic in the world, and their workouts will inspire you to push yourself and will give you more than just strenth (balance, timing, coordination, rhythm).Good luck! I hope this helps you get on your path to healthfulness!
